Protocol converter is an access device that transforms V.35 or Ethernet data into E1. It is called coconversion, which is the gateway. It can make the host with different high-level protocols on the communication network cooperate with each other and complete a variety of distributed applications. In Wan engineering, the protocol converter is a telecommunication terminal device, which is used at both ends of the wide area network. The conversion is actually a physical interface form. For example, the telecommunication SDH line is in the form of optical fiber to the user, and then through the PCM telephone terminal to a pair of coaxial (BNC), and the wide area port of the user's router.

If the serial port (such as V.35), then in order to achieve the conversion of BNC to the serial port, we need the protocol converter, that is, the input of the protocol converter is the coaxial cable, and the output is the serial port, so it should be the protocol of the physical layer. In addition, there is usually a row of physical jumper switches on the protocol converter, and its settings, such as the frame format of E1, should be consistent with the telecommunication lines. Also, if the router is regarded as DTE, then the protocol converter can be regarded as DCE.
